Sydney Sweeney on the “Magic” of Christmas and What She Took from the White Lotus Set

The 25-year-old Idaho native, who nabbed not one but two Emmy nominations earlier this year for her work on White Lotus and Euphoria, is as holly jolly as they come when the holidays roll around. “I am a very festive person! Christmas is my favorite time of the year and I try to share the magic of Christmas with everyone,” Sweeney recently told Vanity Fair. “I love curling up in sweaters or PJs, watching Christmas movies, spending time with family and friends, decorating and baking cookies! Pretty much anything festive, I’m doing it!”
It’s no surprise to anyone who witnessed Sweeney’s success that she’s as busy as any in-demand actor and producer can be. With several hit shows under her belt, the recent Time 100 Next honoree told V.F. that after some down time during the holidays, she’s looking forward to getting straight back to work in the New Year.
“I’m really excited for my film I’m producing Immaculate. It’s been a long journey and a lot of hard work to get it off the ground. And of course I’m looking forward to season 3 of Euphoria,” she said.
But for now, Sweeney has a new starring role as the face of Tory Burch’s Holiday 2022 campaign. Entitled, “Holiday Help,\” the Euphoria actress shares her stylish tips (and tricks) for getting through the holiday season. In the festive holiday campaign video, we see an enthusiastic Sweeney embrace her inner child as she enjoys jumping on an empty bed with Kevin McCallister of Home Alone inspired energy, picking out holiday gifts and emotional support accessories from her Tory Burch-clad closet, and recording her answering machine message—just like in the olden days—letting her fans and followers know that she’s unavailable while on vacation and not taking calls.
That notion of totally unplugging, and being present with her friends and family, is one of the star’s main requirements for the holiday season.
“I travel a lot during the year so when the holidays come around I like to stay home and enjoy my time with my family…disconnecting my phone, that is my vacay! And a good ski run,” Sweeney said.
Of her holiday traditions, Sweeney says she escapes the madness of Hollywood and returns home to Idaho to unwind. “We usually go to my aunt’s or grandma’s and have dinner together then we get matching PJs every year! It’ll be the first Christmas since the pandemic we will be getting together and I’m so excited.”
And despite being a fashionable face in the world of Hollywood glam, it’s no secret that she isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty—in fact, she loves it. With a passion for chrome and restoring old cars, Sweeney has no problem trading high fashion for some oil-stained coveralls and a basic white tee. So when it comes to her favorite type of clothing, the young star prefers chic comfort.
“I’m a jeans and T-shirt or sweats kind of girl. So I do love my fall winter sweaters and boots,” she said, adding that she “lives” in Tory Burch’s cashmere sweaters and good luck trainers.
And while the Sharp Objects star would probably look good in just about anything, as a proficient athlete, a vintage car aficionado and a lover of pottery painting, her more low key personal style makes sense. But like any girl growing up, especially in the time of social media, Sweeney dealt with insecurities about her body.
In a recent interview with GQ UK, the actress explained that while she was in school she played \”every sport and I studied really hard and I did everything that people wouldn’t think I would do, to show them that my body doesn’t define who I am.”
That’s one of the reasons why Sweeney was excited to partner with Tory Burch—a brand that encourages women to embrace their true selves, through self love, business and fashion.
“I love that Tory’s philosophy is about giving back and supporting and empowering women,” she said. The idea of women prioritizing self love and self care also happens to be one of the star’s holiday tips for the season. “Organize your thoughts, clear your energy, connect with your chakras, and take care of yourself.”
Her self-care ritual of choice? A relaxing bubble bath (while adorned in glittering jewels). And another ritual of sorts? Catching up on some of her favorite TV shows, including the newest season of HBO Max’s White Lotus. But before you ask, no, the star hasn’t formed her fan theories about the Sicily-set season just yet, as she admittedly said she hasn’t found the time to watch. Though, it is a high priority on her holiday binge list.
“I haven’t seen it yet, waiting to have time to sit down and binge it all. I’m super excited to watch,\” Sweeney said.
Revisiting her time on the Hawaiian set for the show’s first season, the White Lotus star revealed the one costume item she kept after filming. “I was surrounded by such funny and amazing people, so the experience in itself was a blast! And I kept the shirt that said, ‘Jam out with your clam out,’\” she said.
A cheeky tee—fitting of Sweeney’s effortless, jeans-and-T-shirt-cool-girl style, of course.
